After months of speculation, the new Canada Food Guide was released in January 2019. We are excited to promote the many positive changes that Canada’s food guide has made!
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
The new food guide is much wider in scope than the old, single-page rainbow food guide. It focuses more on making recommendations for healthy eating and how we make these choices. The new food guide even offers online resources including actionable advice, videos and recipes at https://food-guide.canada.ca.

Here are some of the new tips:
- Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods and protein foods. Choose protein foods that come from plants more often.
- Make water your drink of choice. Replace sugary drinks with water.
- Look at food labels.
- Choose foods with healthy fats instead of saturated and trans-fat.
- Be aware marketing can influence your choices.
- Limit processed foods. When choosing these foods, eat them less often and in small amounts.
- Plan what you eat. Prepare meals and snacks using ingredients that have no added sodium, sugar or saturated fat. Cook more often at home.
- Choose healthier menu options when eating out.
- Be mindful of your eating habits.
- Take the time to sit down and eat. Enjoy your food.
- Notice when you are hungry and full.
- Eat meals with others. Involve others in planning and preparing meals. Culture and traditions can be a part of healthy eating.

Every diet should be personalized to meet the needs of the individual. Your diet is the foundation of your health. If you have questions about your diet, see a qualified practitioner that can give you educated advice.
