Benefits of Hydrotherapy

Engaging in exercises in the water can yield significant advantages for those looking to improve rehabilitation and fitness..

Joint Relief

The buoyancy of water reduces joint loading, making it ideal for individuals recovering from joint replacements or surgeries. For example, someone with a knee replacement can walk or perform exercises in water without putting excessive stress on their new joint.

Balance & Core

Water creates a natural resistance that helps improve balance and core stability. Activities like standing on one leg or using a flotation device to engage the core muscles are common hydrotherapy practices.

Strength & Endurance

Water resistance enhances strength and endurance as it requires more effort to move. For instance, performing leg lifts or arm exercises in water can build muscle strength and improve overall endurance.

Pain Management

The warm water in hydrotherapy pools can help to soothe and relax tight muscles, reducing joint pain and the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Gentle water aerobics is often recommended for those suffering from chronic pain.

Safe Balance Training

Hydrotherapy provides a safe environment for those at risk of falls to train balance. The water supports the body, reducing the fear of falling and allowing for exercises like walking sideways or practising stepping over objects.

Neurological Support

For individuals with spinal cord injuries or neurological conditions, the water's support allows them to perform movements they might struggle with on land. Aqua jogging or floating exercises can help improve mobility and muscle function.

What is Hydrotherapy and how does it contribute to healing in naturopathic practice?

Hydrotherapy uses water in various forms to promote healing and relieve symptoms, improving circulation and reducing inflammation.

Is the pool open to the public during my hydrotherapy session?

Yes. Saying that, the hours set aside for hydrotherapy are typically not that busy.

Is hydrotherapy a 1-on-1 appointment or a group session?

We do 1-on-1 hydrotherapy sessions to ensure the patient gets the most out of the session.

Do I need to be a good swimmer to take hydrotherapy?

Not necessarily. The therapy pool maximum water level is about chest height. Saying that, you should feel comfortable being in the water. If you wish to do hydrotherapy in the main pool then being an adequate swimmer is recommended.

How often should I attend hydrotherapy sessions for optimal benefits?

As with most treatment plans, this is patient specific, so your results may vary. Some hydrotherapy patients come on a weekly basis, while others follow a program of a couple of sessions over a two month period.
